EUROPEAN HANDBIKE CIRCUIT Introduction |

 |
The idea to organise a handbike event in Louny first appeared in May 2002 when Christian Peter, an Austrian handbiker took part in the Karel Rais Memorial wheelchair race. He enjoyed the course of the race, organizing skills of the team and hospitality of the town. Christian Peter was, and still is, an official of the then European Handbike Circle (currently European Handcycling Federation) that organises a European series of handbike races. After the experience he had made in Louny he asked the organisers from the ASK Elna Počerady sports club to host one of the races and become members of the prestigious EHC series.
However, Louny organisers had to come up with another race as the May date was clashing with other EHC events. The result: new date, new course, new challenge. The aim was to bring the race as close to spectators as possible. Therefore, the Louny municipality was asked to allow the race to start and finish at the Komenského Square close to the town centre. The first EHC Louny race, a 17 km time trial from Louny to Počedělice and back, was held in 2003. The event was a success. In 2006, the first EHF European Handcycling Championships took place on the same course. Since then, a criterium in the town centre is part of the event, still attracting more and more people, both competitors and spectators.
Come to Louny and enjoy the unforgettable atmosphere of the EHC Louny. |
